Why Processes Are Important
Today, organizations have learned to appreciate the value of
consistent, repeatable processes to achieve business goals. An
enterprise, of whatever size, is the sum total of its business processes.

Organizations know that to meet their strategic goals, they must focus
on the customer's requirements and the processes used to fulfill those
requirements.

Organizational Performance and Process Performance
Organizational performance depends on the extent to which processes
accomplish their purpose and the efficiency of information flows from,
to, and within those processes. Because enterprises are organized into
groups of people, normally called departments, the ability of
department processes to interface and interact with one another is vital.

Measuring Process Performance
Processes need to be measured. This is the only way to know if
processes are working as required. Organizations must identify key
data points within processes that indicate if the process is working as
designed.

The data collected to provide the measure must be meaningful, i.e., it
must lend itself to an analysis that can establish if the process is
performing satisfactorily or not. If the process is not performing as
required, it must be changed.
