Innovation is neither a deliberately planned initiative nor a continuous
process. It only occurs, like a perfect storm, with the convergence of
ideal conditions. Innovation is relatively short-lived, difficult to repeat,
and, like the weather, it is generally unpredictable.

Organizations can increase their opportunities to be innovative if they
create a solid foundation of knowledge stewardship, objective best
practices, and continually optimized processes within their culture that
is inclusive and pervasively collaborative.

Innovation capability requires a commitment to excellence and a
strategy for change that are unselfishly led, competently managed, and
oriented to long-term, sustainable organizational results. When
organizations become consistently competent with a sustained level of
high performance, the door to real innovation may open.
