Information Development Capability
Universal Need  Information development is a broad field of
activity that crosses virtually all professions and is practiced by
people with a wide variety of job titles. It is the principle means
by which knowledge is created.

Disciplined Method  When practiced appropriately, information
development offers a disciplined method for creating a vast array
of information products to serve a virtually infinite range of
purposes.

Common Definition  People and organizations often overlook
the benefits of developing an effective information development
capability because of the lack of a common definition and the use
of many different terms to identify the same general activity.

Consistent Terminology  Over the years information
development has been specialized and adapted to specific
knowledge domains. As a result, the attributes of the knowledge
domains themselves are applied to the information creating
activity, known by different names within different knowledge
domains.

Better Information Management  This fragmentation of
understanding leads to scatter-shot approaches and results in
poor management and use of information, including the many
ways it can be applied to the benefit of larger objectives.

Strategic Approach  Information development is a single
approach that organizations can apply to treat information as a
strategic asset. It is best managed from a supply chain
perspective that pays attention to how information is created,
accessed, presented and used in daily operations and
decision-making.

Information Development is Not IT  Information development
must not be confused with an organization's information
technology (IT) functions. Information development is concerned
with the creation and use of information content to the
organization's business advantage. IT should be focused on
providing the technologies and network pipeline to enable,
move, and store data and information content. IT can never be
responsible for content or allowed to dictate how the business
uses it.

Enabled Capability  An effective information development
capability is driven by a clear information strategy applied to the
whole organization. It is based on enabling people with the right
skills to build and manage the information content needed to
meet business objectives.

Information Excellence  In practice, when managed as an
independent capability available to the whole organization, this
approach can result in a culture of information and knowledge
excellence.
