About My Work
People, Process & Technology
People, processes and technology have always
been at the heart of my career. My viewpoint has
evolved over time from an initial exclusive
interest in technology.

Limits of Technology
I began to understand that technology alone
does not offer complete solutions to the most
vexing problems of business and society, but
serves a supporting and facilitating role. We
need to solve problems through a more balanced
approach that accounts for as many situationally
relevant factors as possible.

Knowledge as the Basis for Progress
The basis for real progress is knowledge and the
development of human potential that it enables.
By respecting and further developing knowledge,
we are able to expand our capability to address
the issues that an ever increasingly complex
society engenders.

From Knowledge to Know-How
Finding success as we move forward to solve
problems and meet challenges depends on
focusing on those areas of knowledge that allow
us to achieve our goals. This ability to follow
through on ideas and take the required action
results from knowing how to get specific things
done. This is the secret of execution.

Building Know-How
We gain know-how from learning, experience
and practice. Our ability to capture, share and
leverage our know-how leads to the
accomplishment of ever more challenging goals.

Making the Most of Know-How
My work now, as in the past, is centered on
developing increasingly effective ways to capture,
share and leverage know-how in a variety of
contexts. This focus on the "how" of getting
things done enables individuals and
organizations to reach ever increasing levels of
accomplishment.

Holistic View, Systems Perspective
This focus on the "how" includes all factors that
are involved in getting work done -- the range of
issues involving people, process and technology.
My work strives to provide a holistic view from a
systems perspective. This approach cuts
through the complexity found in modern
enterprise to allow a complete, but easy to
understand, explanation in plain language.

Process Orientation
I have come to appreciate the need to see
virtually every activity as a process. Whatever we
are trying to accomplish, the steps of a process
get us to a successful result. Once we
understand a process, consistently following it
adds quality to our effort. Our processes provide
the framework for understanding all that we do
and a road map for getting things done.

Communication is the Key
I am irrevocably committed to the proposition
that the key to our success in all of our
endeavors is effective communication. At the
core of this commitment is my belief that
knowledge provides the foundation for our best
decision-making and resulting actions.

High levels of performance can only be achieved
when what we know is communicated openly and
impartially to everyone who needs that
knowledge.

My work, in its various contexts, will continue to
contribute to improving the communication of
knowledge as the basis for expanding human
potential to achieve improved levels of collective
performance.
About Me
Midwestern Roots
I grew up in the small Illinois town of Galva,
where I now reside. As a native of the American
heartland, my work reflects a traditional
dedication to honesty and quality of effort. My
location provides relatively easy access to the
Louis. I'm also equipped to telecommute
anywhere in the world.

Education
I have an associate degree from Illinois Central
College in Peoria, and a bachelors degree from
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. I also
did graduate work at SIU in journalism. My
education provided me with a solid foundation
for my writing and communication work. While at
SIU, I was a staff writer for the
Daily Egyptian,
the university newspaper.

Military Service
I served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years,
where I was introduced to electronic technology
and voice and digital radio communications. I
also served nearly four years with the Air
National Guard. This experience gave me the
technical background to understand the nuts
and bolts of technology. While with the Air
National Guard, I was the base communications
supervisor and responsible for the training of a
staff of communication technicians.

Technician to Communicator
My fascination with technology and my love of
writing led me to find productive ways to
combine the two interests. I began to realize
that people needed a better understanding of
the technologies that were gaining a
predominate role in their work and personal
lives. I made a deliberate transition from
practicing technician to technical communicator.
This transition opened the door to opportunities
in the domains of software development,
manufacturing, and information systems.

Communicator to Consultant
My work as a technical communicator naturally
led to the development of new and expanded
skills needed to support that work, such as
business and systems analysis, project
management and operations management.

I began to take a more holistic view of how
organizations work to achieve goals. I
understood the need to use a balanced
approach to organizational performance, putting
people, processes and technology into proper
relationships with each other.

My consulting work focused on applying my
knowledge and communication skills to a range
of roles, often focusing on process analysis and
improvement, but always using communication
techniques as primary tools to achieve results.

Independent Writer and Consultant
In 2011, I retired from corporate employment to
pursue independent writing and consulting
opportunities.

I devote much of my time to finding ways to
share what I have learned in my career about the
importance of the concepts and techniques of
knowledge stewardship to the ongoing success
and well-being of organizations.

I am also interested in helping small businesses
improve their chances of success through an
awareness, understanding and optimization of
their business processes.

I am currently available to apply my experience
to help find solutions to challenges across a
variety of problem domains and industries. I am
particularly interested in projects that focus on
the use of communication techniques to foster
better productivity and performance based on
the application of locally developed knowledge.
